Childbirth preparation courses

Childbirth preparation courses – in German called “Geburtsvorbereitungskurse” – are usually led by a midwife and they take place in a midwife’s office. These courses are an important preparation for you giving birth. You will learn about pregnancy, get information about giving birth and caring for your baby. Following questions will be answered:

  • What happens in my body during giving birth? What is the birth process like?

  • How do I behave during contractions?

  • What do I need to keep in mind during the postpartum period?

  • How do I swaddle, bathe and feed my child? What do I have to pay attention to?

You can ask questions, talk about your fears and exchange information with other pregnant women. Sometimes these connections also last and friendships develop. By now, preparation courses are also offered online.

In case you have a partner, it is also useful for him or her to join the course. Your partner learns how to help you during the birth. Certainly, tips and tricks about caring for the baby are also important for your partner. But you can also bring a parent or a friend to the preparation course.

You should register for the childbirth preparation course some weeks ahead. It is recommended to register in the 12th week of pregnancy because the courses are fully booked quickly. However, they usually take place around the 25th to 28th week of pregnancy.

The costs are 60,- to 120,- € per participant (partners are not included) and are reimbursed by the health insurance for the mothers (sometimes also for the partners).

You can find addresses of midwifes in your area in the adress box.
